Floor sweeps, sweep the pile straight into the duct
A floor sweep is a low slot in the wall, wired into your dust duct. You push the pile at it with a broom and the suction takes it. No dustpan, no bending, no half the pile skating past the edge of the pan. The last annoying step of cleanup just stops existing.
It is the cheapest upgrade in a ducted shop and the one people put off longest. It is also easy to get wrong. A sweep in the wrong spot never gets used, and a sweep with square inside corners chokes on the first pile of shavings. Here is how to get both right.

- Angle every inside face toward the duct or it will clog.
- Put a gate on it, or it bleeds air off your whole system.

What is a floor sweep for dust collection?
A floor sweep is an open slot mounted at floor or baseboard level and connected to your dust collection duct. It gives your system an inlet at the floor. You sweep a pile toward the slot, the suction pulls it into the duct, and it lands in the same bin as everything else your system catches.
That is the whole idea. It is not a machine and it has no moving parts. It is a shaped opening plus a duct connection. What makes one good or bad is the shape of the opening and where you put it.
You can run a sweep off a shop vac or off a dust collector. A collector will move a pile of shavings faster because it moves far more air. A shop vac works on a smaller sweep and a shorter duct run, and it is what most one car garage shops actually have.
Where should I mount a floor sweep?
Put it where the mess already lands, not where the duct happens to run. The wall behind a miter saw station is the classic spot. Under a bench works. So does the end of the walkway you naturally sweep toward. If you have to change how you sweep to use it, you will not use it.
A few placement rules that hold up:
- Mount the opening flush with the floor. A lip the broom has to lift over kills it.
- Keep the duct behind it short and straight where you can. A sweep at the far end of a long branch full of turns pulls poorly.
- Do not put it behind something you have to move first.
- One sweep in the right place beats three in the wrong places.
If you are planning duct anyway, run a capped branch to a second spot now. Cutting into a sealed system later to add a sweep is a bad afternoon, and the cap costs almost nothing today.
Why does my floor sweep clog in the corners?
Square inside corners are the reason. Debris stops in a square corner, more material piles on top of it, and soon the slot is choked while the duct behind it is empty. The fix is to angle every inside face so it points at the duct opening. Nothing gets a flat spot to rest on.
This came up in a shop-built sweep box in the guides we studied. The builder made a plywood box with square corners, watched it trap shavings, and had to go back and angle the interior before it worked. Same lesson shows up on CNC dust boots and tool hoods. Flat inside corners collect. Angled inside faces move.
The other common clog is at the hose joint. If you drilled a round hole in a wooden box by eye and pushed a hose into it, the ledge where the hose stops is a shelf that catches long shavings. Glue a known-size pipe stub into the hole instead, so the inside is one smooth tube with no step.
How do I make my floor sweep pick up better?
Narrow the intake and lift the bottom edge a little. One builder tested exactly this on a sweep he already owned. He fitted a narrower shaped nozzle over the stock opening and raised the gap between the nozzle and the floor slightly. Pickup per broom pass got noticeably better.
The physics behind it is the same tradeoff you meet everywhere in dust collection. For any given machine, a smaller opening moves air faster through a smaller area. A wide slot spreads the same air over more space, so it moves slower everywhere. Slow air will not lift shavings.
The floor gap matters for the same reason. If the sweep sits dead flat on the floor, the only air path is through the pile itself. A small gap gives the air a way in, and that moving air is what actually carries the debris.
Two more things that show up as pickup problems but are really system problems: a loaded filter, and open gates elsewhere in the shop. Both starve the sweep. Check them before you rebuild the nozzle.

Does a floor sweep need its own blast gate?
Yes, if it shares duct with your machines. A sweep with no gate is an open hole in your system all day. Air takes the easy path, so the tool you are actually running pulls weaker every minute the sweep sits open. A gate closes it when you are not using it.
There is a second reason, and it catches people who automate their shop. Every other pickup in the system is attached to a tool, so switching on the tool can switch on the collector. A floor sweep has no tool. It needs its own switch or button, or you end up sweeping at a dead port.
One warning about gates, from every source that raised it. Plain stamped gates often leak around the slide even when they are open, and they jam when dust packs into the slide track. That is the complaint, not the exception.

What should never go into a floor sweep?
Hardware. Screws, nails, staples, and dropped bits. A floor sweep is the easiest way for metal to get into your duct, because you are sweeping the whole floor and not looking at what is in the pile. Metal pulled through the system can damage the fan and tear up a filter.
Give the pile a look before you push it in. It takes two seconds. A separator ahead of the machine catches a lot of what gets past you, which is one more reason a separator lid earns its place in a shop with a sweep.
Same goes for anything wet, anything oily, and anything long enough to bridge the duct. Long offcuts and strips of tape are champion clog starters.
Does a floor sweep replace collection at the tool?
No. A sweep handles what already hit the floor. Catching dust at the tool stops it from getting to the floor in the first place, and that is the job with the most leverage. A sweep is the cleanup layer, not the capture layer.
Worth saying plainly: the dust you can see on the floor is the easy part. The fine dust you cannot see is what shops work hardest to catch, and it does not sweep. That is what capture at the tool and room air filtration are for.
Two habits that go with a sweep. Empty the bin on a schedule rather than when it looks full, because suction falls off long before the bin looks done. And clean where you do not look. Rafters, light fixtures, and the tops of cabinets collect more than the floor does.
Some shops clear settled dust with a leaf blower and the door open. It moves dust around rather than catching it, so treat it as a last step, not a substitute for collection. It also does not work at all in a shop with no outside door.

A shop-built sweep is a plywood box and about four feet of 1x4. The hard parts are the angled interior and a clean round duct connection. If you have a table saw and an afternoon, build it. If you would rather bolt one on and go sweep, buy it.
