Micron ratings and HEPA, what the numbers actually mean
A micron rating tells you the smallest particle a filter reliably catches. Lower number, finer filtration. That is the whole definition. It is also the whole limit of what the number tells you.
It does not tell you how long the filter holds that. It does not tell you whether anyone tested it. And it does not answer the thing most people want to know. Why does my filter clog every other weekend?

What does a micron rating on a filter mean?
A micron is one thousandth of a millimetre. A micron rating describes the smallest particle size a filter reliably catches. A lower number means finer filtration. A 1 micron filter catches finer material than a 5 micron one.
Be precise about what that claims. It describes what the media catches, on a pass, when it is new. It is a description of the filter. It is not a description of your shop. It is not a promise about anything else.
Here is the scale, so the numbers mean something physical.

What does HEPA mean?
HEPA is a defined filter standard. It is set at a particle size of 0.3 micron. That size gets singled out as the hardest for any filter to trap. Both larger and smaller particles are somewhat easier to catch. That is why the standard sits at that size, and not at a smaller-sounding one.
The word gets used loosely. Several sources warn that products advertise HEPA, or a micron number, with no third-party test data. Test conditions often go undisclosed too. A rating on a box is a claim, not proof. Look for whether anyone independent measured it.
The research does not agree on how bad the problem is. One creator treats micron marketing as basically unregulated. He points out a published number may only describe a brand new filter. A second takes a middle line. Some companies publish real third-party data, others just use the word. A third treats HEPA as a meaningful engineering standard when it is properly certified. All three agree some claims are fluff.
One more thing about HEPA. On some machines the rating depends on running the matched filter and the matched bag together. The filter alone does not get you there. Check the manual before you assume.
What is MERV, and how is it different?
MERV is a separate filter scale. It comes from home heating and cooling. Higher numbers filter finer per pass. MERV 13, 14, and 15 are the grades that keep showing up in shop builds and canister upgrades. MERV 16 appears once as a pricier step up.
Do not treat a MERV number and a micron number as the same thing. They are related, but they measure differently. Swapping one for the other is how people end up comparing two filters that were never comparable.
Finer is not free
Finer pores mean more airflow resistance. That is a physical tradeoff and there is no way around it. It is why fine filtration needs a lot of surface area. Without the area, it chokes the system.
This is the whole reason a pleated canister beats a bag. It packs far more media into a similar footprint. So it can filter finer and hold more before it restricts. Five separate research batches describe the same swap. Drop the stock bag, fit a canister, and get back suction the bag had been quietly eating.
The failure runs the other way too. Undersize a filter and it becomes the restriction. One builder watched the collection bag try to blow itself off the unit from back pressure. That is a fairly clear signal.
Bag, canister, or a stage in front?
Four options, and they are not really competing. The last row is the one most people skip, then wish they had not.

Why is my shop vac filter clogging so fast?
Because it is doing two jobs at once. With nothing in front of it, the filter catches bulk chips and fine dust together. The bulk load packs the media in a hurry. Once the media packs, suction drops sharply. The motor is still running flat out.
That drop is not gradual in the way people expect. It is one of the most agreed-on facts in the research, across six batches. A loaded filter kills suction across the whole system. Plenty of people then blame the ducting and go buy pipe.
There is a second cost. A machine with weak or loaded filtration puts some of the fine dust back into the room. It does not hold on to it. The research has a rude nickname for a collector that does this, and it is not a compliment.
How do I keep my filter from clogging?
Put something in front of it. A bag inside the tank works. So does a separator stage before the vacuum. Either one catches the bulk before it reaches the media. The filter stops being the first line. It goes back to being the last line, which is the job it is good at.
This is the one place on this page where we sell the answer. So here are the downsides first.
- +A separator costs you some airflow. It adds a stage, more hose, and more turns. Nobody in the research claims a separator adds suction. Published loss figures range widely enough that you should not trust any single one.
- +Separator lids can overfill quietly. Once the bucket fills past a point, debris passes straight through to the vacuum. There is no warning. This is a known weakness of the whole category, not of one product. Check the bucket.
- +A separator is not a filter. It drops the heavy material out. Fine dust still travels on to whatever filter you have.
What you get in return is a filter that stays clean far longer. You empty the bag less. Suction holds up across a working day instead of falling off after an hour. For most shops that trade comes out ahead. A loaded filter costs more airflow than the separator ever did.
Our separator lids turn a standard bucket into that stage. We sell the lid. You supply the bucket. We say so up front, because a lid is not a cyclone body.
Can you clean a filter, and how?
Yes, and the direction matters. Clean from the clean side outward. You are pushing trapped dust back the way it came. Do it outdoors and away from people. Everything you knock loose has to go somewhere.
Gentle compressed air is described as the kinder method. Hard mechanical shaking is not. One reviewer reported that cranking a built-in cleaning paddle hard can damage fine filter media. Damaged media does not go back to how it was.
Filter bags are the exception. One source says never wash one. Washing strips the coating and the packed-in layer of fine dust that the fabric relies on.
Replace on a schedule. Do not wait for a visible drop. Performance fades gradually, and two batches report measurable airflow loss over service life. You will not notice the day it happens.
Why you should not trust your own filter test
Worth knowing before you buy a meter and settle it yourself. One creator ran his own informal comparison. He got a result he did not believe. A badly clogged setup with no bag read cleaner than a clean fine-filtration setup. He disowned the result on the spot. He said he did not trust his own conditions or his consumer meter.
That is not evidence that dirty filters are fine. It is evidence that informal testing with a cheap meter gives you a rough direction and nothing more. Two separate sources flag their own meters exactly this way.
What we sell here, and what we do not

Two places our parts touch this topic. A separator lid is the stage that keeps bulk material out of your filter, covered above. And a canister retrofit sometimes needs a filter of one diameter to mate to a drum of another. That is a reducer problem, which is squarely our line of work.
One rule we hold ourselves to on that second one. A fine filter already needs all the surface area it can get. So any part sitting near it must not narrow the path further. Bridging two diameters is the job. Pinching the airflow to do it is not.

Do I need both a HEPA filter and a HEPA bag?+
On some machines, yes. The rating depends on running the matched filter and bag together. The filter alone does not get you there. Buy the filter and skip the bag and you may be short of the rating you thought you paid for. Check the manual for your machine.
