Does PVC dust collection pipe need grounding?
There is no settled answer. Anyone who says there is has picked a side. Shop builders who ground their pipe often report the shocks stopping. An electrician who put a meter on PVC says outside wire drains almost nothing. Nobody says grounding does harm. Even the doubters ground their own shops.

This is two questions, not one
Most arguments online go sideways for one reason. Two separate questions get mashed into one. Keep them apart and the topic gets clear.
- 01Does grounding stop the shocks? A comfort question. People argue about the method, not about whether the shocks are real.
- 02Can dust in a duct ignite? A fire question. Shop creators and workplace safety guidance answer it at completely different scales.
This page answers both, in separate sections. It never merges the answers. Nothing here is safety advice. We are not qualified to give it, and no part we sell changes any of it.
Why does my dust collection hose shock me?
Dust and air moving fast through plastic pipe builds a static charge. That part is not in dispute. Every source agrees the shocks are real. Plenty of them got zapped on camera.
Here is the physics that makes the rest hard. PVC is an electrical insulator. Most of the charge sits on the inside wall, where the dust rubs. Only some of it works its way to a surface you can touch. So the charge you feel is not the whole charge. The outside of the pipe is not where the problem lives.
Tools that throw a lot of chips fast make more of it. One creator picks out a benchtop planer as the worst in his shop. Rub a plastic duct and it can build enough charge to lift small scraps of paper. More than one video shows it.
Who says what about grounding
Five positions show up in the research. We list them by role, not by name. We do not rank them. Read the table and draw your own line.

Does wrapping copper wire around PVC actually stop static?
This is the sharpest split in shop dust collection. The common advice is to wrap bare copper wire around the outside of the pipe. An electrician tested that idea with real gear. He says it does close to nothing for the pipe as a whole.
He put a 1,000 volt insulation resistance meter on PVC. It read more than about 1,999 megaohms through the pipe wall. Along the surface it read the same. The number barely moved next to a wrapped copper wire. For scale, the same meter read about 504 megaohms across a wooden workbench. Nobody thinks a workbench is a conductor. His call: outside wire drains the spot it touches, and nothing more.
The other side does not really answer that. One full build video treats joint-by-joint copper grounding as standard practice. It checks continuity end to end. It never takes on the insulator problem at all. Several builders ground and report the shocks stopping. One builder did the same work and kept getting shocked.
Notice what both sides agree on. Nobody calls grounding harmful. Both doubters say to do it anyway if it makes you comfortable. The real fight is about method. Does a thin wire on the outside of an insulator do anything at all?

What hobby shop creators say
Four creators across two research batches went looking for a case. They wanted a documented home shop fire or explosion, caused by static inside PVC dust duct. None of them found one. They treat the idea as most likely a myth at hobby scale. They also agree that industrial dust explosions are real and well documented. Those happen under very different conditions. Most of them ground their own systems anyway.
Read that carefully. Not finding a case is not proof that it cannot happen. It is an absence of evidence. The people making the argument say so themselves.
What workplace safety guidance says
A government workplace safety agency describes combustible wood dust deflagration. It calls it a documented workplace hazard. Its framing needs five things lined up at once. Piled-up fine dust. A cloud of it. A closed space. An ignition source. Oxygen.
Its central control is housekeeping. Specifically, cleaning the hidden surfaces where fine dust piles up unnoticed. Rafters. Light fixtures. The insides of electrical equipment.
Why we do not merge them
The creators are talking about static setting off a moving dust stream inside a hobby shop duct. The agency is talking about fine dust piling up on surfaces in a workplace. Different mechanism. Different scale. Different control. Nothing in the research puts them together, so this page does not either.
One line is worth carrying with you either way. One creator states it flatly. A grounding wire on PVC will cut down minor static shocks. It will not prevent a fire or an explosion. Grounding is about shocks. Do not buy it as fire protection.
How do woodworkers ground PVC dust pipe?
Here is the method the research describes. We present it as what people do. It is not something we tell you will work. Four separate builds follow roughly the same steps.
- 01Drive short sheet metal screws through the pipe wall. Space them every 1 to 2 feet, often alternating sides as you go.
- 02Run 18 gauge bare copper wire from screw head to screw head, the full length of the pipe.
- 03Connect that wire to the metal body of the dust collector. That body is already grounded through its own power cord.
- 04Keep the screw tips nearly flush inside, so they do not snag chips and start a clog. One build aimed for about 1/16 in of screw inside the pipe.
Screw sizes used were #6 by 5/8 in and 3/4 in. Those were picked to suit the wall thickness of the pipe in that shop. 18 gauge came up in three separate builds. Nobody found a reason to go heavier.
The electrician has a different idea for a section that really shocks you. Wrap that section in conductive metal tape, all the way around. The tape has to cover the full circle. Then ground the tape. His argument is that a full wrap drains a local area. A thin wire cannot. That is one source, and nobody else tried it.
One method disagreement is worth knowing. One source runs bare wire down the inside of the pipe instead of outside. Another source warns that loose metal inside ducting snags debris and starts clogs. The research never takes on that tension. Pick your side knowing that.
Does flex hose need a ground wire?
Flex hose is the easier case. It depends on what you bought. Some flex hose ships with a wire already spiraled inside. Sometimes that wire is there for support, sometimes it is sold for static. Either way it is easy to expose at the end and connect to a ground.
Hose with no wire in it is much harder to retrofit. That is the whole reason anti-static hose exists as a pricier product line. Buy the hose with the wire in it if grounding matters to you. Adding one later is a bad afternoon.
One source says runs shorter than about 5 feet do not need grounding. The logic is that charge scales with surface area. That is one source and one rule of thumb, not a standard.
How do I test if my grounding wire is working?
Two checks show up. The first is continuity. Put a meter on the wire. Confirm the path holds from the farthest screw back to the collector body. One full build video treats that check as part of the job, not an optional extra.
The second check is the honest one. Use the shop and see whether the shocks stop. One builder did the whole screw and wire job. He confirmed his connections. He kept getting shocked anyway. Continuity tells you the wire is connected. It does not tell you the charge inside the pipe found its way to that wire.
Do plastic blast gates need grounding?
No, according to the one source that takes it head on. Metal gates get tied into the same ground wire as the duct. Metal is conductive, and it sits right in the airflow. Plastic and acrylic gates have nothing to bond. There is nothing to connect and nothing to skip.
That is a fair point for a printed gate over a metal one. It is worth being precise about why. It is a statement about what a plastic gate does not require. It is not a statement that a plastic gate protects you from anything.
What we will not claim about our own parts
Our fittings are printed in PETG. PETG is an electrical insulator, the same as PVC. Nobody has tested how a printed fitting behaves with static. That includes us.
So we make no static claim about any part we sell. Not anti-static. Not conductive. Not grounded. Not reduces static. If you see a printed dust fitting sold on a static claim, ask who measured it.
What every source agrees on
For all the arguing, four things are not in dispute. If you take nothing else off this page, take these.
- +Empty the bin. Full dust bins are treated as their own concern across the research. That is separate from anything to do with static. Regular emptying is the fix everyone names.
- +Watch what you suck up. Screws and nails picked up by a hose or a floor sweep can reach the fan. Hardware damages the fan and the filter. Looking before you sweep is free.
- +Shocks are worth dealing with on their own. A shock can startle you at the wrong moment while a machine is running. Two sources make that point with no fire argument at all.
- +Clean where you do not look. Fine dust piles up on rafters, light fixtures, and inside equipment. That is exactly where workplace safety guidance points.
Where that leaves you
If the shocks bother you, grounding is what people do. It is cheap. It takes an afternoon. Nobody in the research says it hurts. Drive the screws through the wall rather than wrapping the outside. That is the one method both camps can live with. Buy hose with the wire already in it.
Then check whether it actually worked, because sometimes it does not. And do not treat any of it as fire protection. The one source who takes that on says plainly that it is not.
