Ryobi ONE+ Dust Collection: Every Tool, Every Port Size

Ryobi ONE+ tools are in millions of garages. Most have dust ports. Here is how to connect them to a shop vac and actually capture the dust.

Ryobi ONE+ is one of the most popular cordless platforms in North America. The 18V system covers over 200 tools. Many of them have built-in dust ports. Getting those tools connected to a shop vac makes a huge difference in shop cleanliness.

Ryobi ONE+ tools mostly use a 1-1/4 inch (32mm) dust port. This is the same size as Milwaukee and DeWalt. But Ryobi tools are often priced much lower, and customers sometimes find that cheap universal adapters fit poorly. A custom adapter for the exact Ryobi port geometry solves this.

Ryobi Corded Tools

Ryobi also sells corded tools at very low price points. These include belt sanders, sheet sanders, and routers. Most corded Ryobi sanders use a 32mm port. Older models may use a dust bag with a 25mm or 28mm spout. Check the port size before ordering an adapter.

Connecting Ryobi to a Shop Vac

Standard small shop vac hoses have a 32mm OD at the tool end. This often fits Ryobi 32mm ports directly. The problem is the fit is rarely tight. The port geometry on Ryobi tools can vary. A sloppy fit lets air in around the joint and kills suction.

A custom 3D-printed adapter matches the Ryobi port ID on one side and the shop vac hose OD on the other. The result is a snug fit at both ends. Suction goes to capturing dust instead of leaking around the joint.

Ryobi to a Dust Extractor

Some Ryobi users upgrade to a Festool or Bosch dust extractor for better filtration. The Festool CT hose is 27mm OD. The Bosch VAC hose is 35mm OD. To connect a Ryobi 32mm port to either extractor, you need an adapter sized for the specific combination.

32mm to 27mm (Ryobi to Festool CT): a step-down adapter reduces the port to the Festool hose size.

32mm to 35mm (Ryobi to Bosch VAC): a step-up adapter expands slightly to accept the larger Bosch hose.

Shop Vac Recommendations for Ryobi Tools

Ryobi sells its own PCW06B shop vac. It uses a 1-1/4 inch hose that connects to Ryobi tools with little or no adapter needed. The PCW06B is a basic 6-gallon unit, not HEPA. Add a HEPA filter bag if you do regular sanding work.

For better dust capture, any 6 to 12 gallon shop vac with a HEPA filter and a proper adapter is a significant upgrade over no dust collection at all.

The Most Common Ryobi Dust Collection Mistake

People buy Ryobi tools and assume the dust bag that comes with the sander is enough. The stock dust bag on a Ryobi orbital sander captures maybe 20 to 30 percent of the dust. It fills fast and the fine particles escape through the bag walls.

Remove the bag. Connect a shop vac with a proper adapter. Capture rate jumps to 80 to 90 percent immediately. That is the single biggest improvement you can make to a Ryobi dust setup.
