Makita LXT Dust Collection: 36mm Ports and What to Do With Them

Makita LXT tools use a 36mm port, not the 32mm standard. Here is what that means for your shop vac hose, your Festool extractor, and your adapters.

Makita chose a slightly different port size for most LXT cordless tools: 36mm inside diameter, 40mm outside diameter. This is larger than the 32mm port that Milwaukee and DeWalt use.

The difference is only 4mm. But 4mm is enough that a standard 1-1/4 inch shop vac hose end (roughly 32mm OD) does not grip the Makita port. It wiggles and leaks air. You need an adapter that fits the 36mm ID on the tool and connects to your hose on the other end.

Makita vs. Standard Shop Vac Hose

The end of a standard small shop vac hose is about 32mm OD. It is too small to seal against the 36mm ID Makita port. The solution is a short step-up adapter: 32mm tool-side to 36mm hose-side. The adapter bridges the gap and gives an airtight seal at both ends.

If your shop vac uses a larger 1-7/8 inch hose (about 48mm OD), you need a different adapter: 36mm tool-side to 48mm hose-side. This is a simple straight connector.

Makita to Festool CT Extractor

The Festool CT hose is 27mm. The Makita port is 36mm. The adapter reduces from 36mm to 27mm. This is a step-down adapter with a slightly tapered interior to keep airflow smooth.

Performance note: reducing from 36mm to 27mm does cut airflow slightly. For sanding, this is not noticeable. For circular saw cutting, you may see slightly less chip capture than with a larger hose.

Makita Corded Tools

Many Makita corded tools use the same 36mm port as their LXT counterparts. Corded circular saws, jigsaws, and random orbit sanders from Makita are consistent in this regard.

Some older Makita corded tools (pre-2010) used a 35mm port instead of 36mm. The difference is usually within friction-fit tolerance, so a 36mm adapter often works for both sizes. If you have an older tool, check that the adapter seats snugly without rocking.

Makita Track Saw

The Makita SP6000 and XPS01 track saws have a dedicated dust extraction port on the blade housing. This port connects to the included dust bag or to a vacuum via hose. The port size is 36mm, consistent with the rest of the Makita line.

How to Pick Your Adapter

Three questions narrow it down:

  1. What is the dust port ID on your Makita tool? (Usually 36mm)
  2. What vacuum are you connecting to? (Shop vac, dust extractor, central system)
  3. What is the OD of your vacuum hose end?

Answer those three and our configurator picks the right adapter instantly.
