Makita 2012NB Thickness Planer Chip Port Size and Shop Vac Adapter
The Makita 2012NB is a 12 inch benchtop thickness planer. It runs boards through to flatten them and set them to a set depth. A thickness planer makes a huge amount of chips fast. Way more than a hand planer or a sander.
Makita lists the chip port at 68 mm on the inside and 74 mm on the outer cuff. Our PETG adapter plugs into the 68 mm port and steps it to your shop vac or dust extractor hose. No tape. No clamps.

Makita 2012NB Chip Port Size: 68 mm Round Inlet, 74 mm Outer Cuff
Makita publishes the 2012NB dust connection as 68 mm in and 74 mm out. The 68 mm figure is the inside of the chip port, which is what our adapter plugs into. The 74 mm figure is the outer cuff that a wide hose can slip over.
This is a big port, close to 2-3/4 inches across. A thickness planer moves so many chips that a small hose would jam in seconds. The wide 68 mm port lets the chips flow out fast when the air flow keeps up.
A GulpDust adapter fits the 68 mm port on one end and your dust extractor hose on the other end, so you get a tight seal and steady pull on the heavy chip load.
How to Connect a Dust Extractor to the Makita 2012NB
Clear any chips out of the rear port first. A clean port gives the best grip.
Push the small end of the PETG adapter into the 68 mm port. It is a friction fit, so it holds with a firm press. Then press your dust extractor or shop vac hose onto the wide end.
Turn the vac on before you feed a board. A thickness planer buries a port in chips in no time, so run strong air flow the whole time to keep it clear.
Why Thickness Planers Need the Most Chip Pull
A thickness planer makes more chips than almost any bench tool. Each pass peels a full layer off the board. Those chips pile up fast and will bury the tool if you do not pull them away.
Pulling the chips at the wide port keeps the planer from choking and keeps your shop from filling with a mound of shavings. A cyclone separator ahead of the vac helps a lot with this heavy load.
For the best result, match the adapter to the 68 mm port and use a vac or extractor with strong air flow and a big tank. The more air you move, the cleaner the run.
Makita 2012NB Dust Collection FAQ
What size is the chip port on the Makita 2012NB?+
Makita lists it as 68 mm on the inside and 74 mm on the outer cuff. It is a round port at the rear of the planer. Our adapter plugs into the 68 mm inlet.
Does the Makita 2012NB work with a regular shop vac?+
Yes, with an adapter. The 68 mm port is bigger than a normal shop vac hose. The GulpDust PETG adapter fits the planer port on one end and your vac or extractor hose on the other.
Will a shop vac keep up with a thickness planer?+
A thickness planer makes a heavy chip load. A shop vac helps, but a dust extractor with strong air flow and a big tank works better. A cyclone separator in line keeps the chips out of the vac.
Do I need clamps to attach the adapter?+
No. The adapter is a friction fit. You press it into the port and it holds. The vac hose end works the same way.
Can I print this adapter myself?+
Yes. You can buy the printed PETG part shipped from the US, or download the STL file and print it at home. We suggest PETG with 3 walls and 25 percent infill.
