Concrete Grinder With Vacuum Setup: Dust Collection Adapters for Hilti, DeWalt, Bosch, and Metabo

Surface grinding concrete is dirty work. OSHA Table 1 says you need a HEPA vacuum and a shroud. This guide covers the hand-held and floor grinder lineup, the rental hookups, and the PETG adapter that connects any brand to any shop vac.

A concrete grinder makes the silica problem worse than an angle grinder. The shroud catches dust at the wheel; the HEPA vac filters it out of the air; the adapter is the part that keeps the two connected for hours.

Surface grinding concrete looks simple. Run a diamond cup wheel over a slab, knock off the high spots, prep the floor for sealer or epoxy. The dust is the problem. Concrete is 25% silica by weight. When the wheel hits the slab, the silica goes airborne in particles smaller than 5 microns. You cannot see them. You can breathe them. They scar lung tissue and the damage is permanent.

OSHA Table 1 says contractors must use either a wet method or a HEPA vacuum paired with a rated shroud when grinding concrete. Most pros pick the dry HEPA path because it works indoors and does not flood the slab. The trick is connecting the grinder shroud to the vac hose. Every brand uses a different port. This guide covers the lineup and the printed PETG adapter that closes the gap.

Hilti Concrete Grinder With Vacuum

Hilti makes the most common pro surface grinder line. The DG 150 is the hand-held diamond grinder; the DG-CA shroud catches the dust. Both pair with the Hilti VC 40 or VC 75 HEPA dust extractor.

Hilti DG 150 Setup

The DG 150 is a 5 inch surface grinder with a planetary head. The DG-CA shroud uses a 32mm hose port that locks into the Hilti VC line with a quarter turn. If you own the matched Hilti vac, the connection is plug and play.

Connecting a Hilti Shroud to a Non-Hilti Vac

The Hilti boss is non-standard. A 2-1/2 inch shop vac hose does not fit. A printed PETG adapter sized for the Hilti boss OD and your shop vac hose ID seals the joint. Common pairing: Hilti DG-CA to a Ridgid 2-1/2 inch hose.

DeWalt Concrete Grinder Vacuum Attachment

DeWalt covers concrete grinding from two angles. The DCG409 is a brushless 4-1/2 to 5 inch angle grinder that pairs with a separate dust shroud. The DCH892 is a heavier hand-held surface grinder built for sustained slab work.

DCG409 With Surfacing Shroud

The DCG409 plus the DeWalt DWE46150 cutoff shroud or the DWE46225 surface shroud gives you both jobs in one tool. The surface shroud uses a 1-1/4 inch port. It connects to the DeWalt DWV012 vac without an adapter and to a 2-1/2 inch shop vac hose with a printed PETG step.

DCH892 Heavy-Duty Setup

The DCH892 is a 7 inch surface grinder for concrete prep, paint removal, and overlay work. The factory shroud uses a 1-1/2 inch port. It pairs with a DeWalt DWV012 or a Festool CT 36 AC; either way an adapter is the cleanest connection. See all DeWalt tools we track for the exact port specs on each grinder.

Bosch Concrete Surface Grinder Dust Collection

Bosch covers concrete grinding with two model families. The GBR 14CA is a 5 inch surface grinder with a built-in shroud. The GBR 35 CA is a 7 inch surface grinder for bigger jobs.

Bosch GBR 14CA

The 14CA has a 35mm Click and Clean port that mates with the Bosch GAS18V or VAC090A. The Click and Clean lock holds tight under shroud vibration. If you do not own a Bosch vac, a printed PETG adapter from the Click and Clean boss to your hose ID is the only path.

Bosch GBR 35 CA

The 35 CA uses a 50mm port on the bigger shroud. Heavier work, heavier dust load, bigger hose. The pairing target is a 2-1/2 inch shop vac hose with a 50mm to 2-1/2 inch printed step.

Metabo PWE Series Surface Grinder Shrouds

Metabo (now Metabo HPT in the US) makes the PWE 11-100 hand-held diamond grinder and the RSEV 19-125 RT renovation grinder. Both have integral dust shrouds.

The PWE 11-100 uses a 35mm port. The RSEV uses a 35mm port too. Both line up with the Metabo HEPA vac with the matching hose. Both need a printed PETG adapter to mate to a non-Metabo shop vac. The 35mm to 2-1/2 inch step is the most common print.

Handheld vs Floor Concrete Grinder Dust Collection

Two very different jobs.

The connection problem is the same for both. The hose port on the shroud rarely matches the hose ID on the vac. The hand-held lineup has more variety because each brand designed the shroud for its own vac. The floor lineup is slightly better because most rental floor grinders use a 2 inch or 2-1/2 inch industrial hose that maps to a standard HEPA vac hose ID.

OSHA Table 1 and the Silica HEPA Requirement

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153 Table 1 lists hand-held grinders as a covered task. The compliance path for a concrete grinder is the shroud-plus-HEPA-vacuum approach. The vac must have a HEPA-rated filter (99.97% at 0.3 microns) and at least 25 CFM per inch of wheel diameter. A 5 inch shroud needs at least 125 CFM at the hose end. A 7 inch shroud needs 175 CFM.

The shroud has to fit the wheel. The vac has to meet the CFM spec. The hose has to connect without leaks. If any of the three breaks, the system is no longer OSHA Table 1 compliant. The hose connection is where most setups silently break: a loose adapter looks fine on day one and falls off a few hours into the job.

Concrete Grinder Rental: Which Vacuums Connect

A big share of the search traffic on concrete grinders is rental. Pros and homeowners alike rent a grinder for a one-time slab prep job. The rental yards (Home Depot, United Rentals, Sunbelt) carry a mix of brands, but the vac that comes with the grinder is almost always rented separately or sold as an add-on.

Two patterns that show up in rental yards:

Diamond Cup Wheel vs Segmented Wheel Dust Capture

The wheel choice changes how much dust the shroud has to handle.

The dust capture rate is highest with a cup wheel. The vac has to hold steady CFM for the shroud to keep up. A leaky hose adapter drops CFM by 20% or more without warning.

Why PETG Beats PLA for Concrete Grinder Adapters

Concrete grinding is the hottest, dustiest, hardest-on-the-equipment work GulpDust adapters see. Three reasons PETG wins:

For the full material story see why we use PETG for dust collection and PETG vs PLA vs ABS for 3D printing.

Concrete grinder dust collection works when three parts line up. The shroud matches the wheel. The vac hits the OSHA CFM spec with a true HEPA filter. The hose connects without leaks. The grinder and the vac are usually fine. The hose is where most setups fail.

If you tell us your grinder brand, shroud model, and shop vac hose size, we will print you the adapter that connects them. Made in the USA, shipped in two to three business days.
